The paper deals with the study of real Hessenberg manifolds and relates their topology to the Toda flow on \(p\), the ``symmetric'' part of a semisimple Lie algebra \(g=q+p\) (Cartan decomposition). The authors obtain their mod 2 Betti numbers by reversing Morse inequalities using a theorem of Floyd and a result of the Weyl group.
