Considered is a Cauchy problem with small initial data for a semilinear wave equation with damping and time dependent coefficients of the form: \[ u_{tt}-\Delta u +\mu_1{(1+t)^{-1}}{u_t}+\mu_2^2(1+t)^{-2}u=|u|^p,\quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^n\times[0,\infty), \] \[ u(0,x)= \epsilon f (x), \quad {u_t}(0,x)=\epsilon g(x),\quad x \in\mathbb{R}^n,\ p>1,\ n\geq 1. \] The energy solution is introduced, and one denotes by $T(\epsilon)$ its lifespan. One defines the so-called Strauss exponent $p_S$ as the positive root of a certain quadratic equation depending on $p$. The aim of the article is to investigate the blow-up of solutions in the subcritical as well as critical cases. In both cases, if data and parameter satisfy some requirements, the existence of a positive constant $\epsilon_0$, such that, if $\epsilon\leq\epsilon_0$, the solution $u$ blows up in finite, time is proved. Upper bound estimates for the lifespan are shown. For instance, in case $p=p_S(n+\mu_1)$, the upper bound estimate for the lifespan writes $T(\epsilon)\leq\exp(C{\epsilon}^{-p(p-1)})$.
