Let \(C_{c}(X)\) denote the space \(C(X)\) of all real-valued functions defined on a Hausdorff completely regular space \(X\) when equipped with the compact-open topology. The author shows: the compact sets of \(C_{c}(X)\) are metrizable if and only if \((X,\mathcal{N})\) is trans-separable, where \(\mathcal N\) is the uniformity generated by the pseudometrics \[ d_{A}(x,y) = \sup \{|f(x)-f(y)|:f \in A \} \] with \(A\) running through the compact sets of \(C_{c}(X)\). A uniform space \((X,\mathcal{N})\) is \textit{trans-separable} if for each vicinity \(N \in {\mathcal N}\) there is a countable subset \(Q\) of \(X\) such that \(N(Q)= \bigcup_{x \in Q}U_{N}(x) = X, \) where \(U_{N}(x) = \{ (x,y) \in N \}\). This fact is used to prove that for a \(k\)-space \(X\) the following properties are equivalent {\parindent=8mm\begin{itemize}\item[(i)] \(X\) satisfies the discrete countable chain condition, \item[(ii)] every admissible uniformity on \(X\) is trans-separable, and \item[(iii)] every compact set of \(C_{c}(X)\) is metrizable. \end{itemize}} In addition, several examples are examined.
