The local Langlands conjecture for \(\text{GL}_n\) in characteristic zero was proved by \textit{M. Harris} and \textit{R. Taylor} in [The geometry and cohomology of some simple Shimura varieties. (Annals of Math. Studies 151, Princeton Univ. Press), (2001; Zbl 1036.11027)]. \textit{G. Henniart} gave a simpler proof in [Invent. Math. 139, No. 2, 439--456 (2000; Zbl 1048.11092)] and a variant of it in the present paper. All three proofs use the geometry of certain Shimura varieties over a number field. Henniart's proofs are simpler because they do not need to consider the places with bad reduction of the Shimura varieties. Section 2 of the present article contains a clear explanation of the method of proof of the three papers. The present proof is more elegant than Henniart's first proof, which is due to the use of a theorem on global lifting of local extensions, proved by Henniart in [Math. Ann. 319, 75--87 (2001; Zbl 0985.11056)]. The proof that the correspondence (between representations of the Weil-Deligne group and irreducible representations of the general linear group) is characterized by the wanted properties is in \textit{G. Henniart} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 130, 587--602 (2002; Zbl 1029.22023)].
