    The authors discuss the solutions of the relativistic Boltzmann equation \(V\cdot\nabla_ xF=-C(F,F)\), where the dot represents the Lorentz inner product \((+---)\) of 4-vectors, \(v=(v_ 1,v_ 2,v_ 3)\), \(V=(v_ 0,v_ 1,v_ 2,v_ 3)\), \(X=(x_ 0,x_ 1,x_ 2,x_ 3)\), \(x=(x_ 1,x_ 2,x_ 3)\), \(x_ 0=-t\), \(C(F,F)\) is the collision integral, and \(F\) is the solution of the equation \(\partial_ tF+\hat v\cdot\nabla_ xF=Q(F,F)\) where \(Q(F,F)=v_ 0^{-1}C(F,F)\) and \(\hat v=v/v_ 0=v/(1+| v|^ 2)^{1/2}\). The collision integral has the form \(Q(F,F)(v)=(1/(2v))\int \int \int\delta(U^ 2-1)\delta(U'{}^ 2- 1)\delta(V'{}^ 2)- 1)\cdot\delta^{(4)}(U+V-U'- V')s\sigma(s,\theta)[F(u')F(v')-F(u)F(v)]d^ 4Ud^ 4Ud^ 4 V\) where \(U^ 2=U\cdot U=u^ 2_ 0-u^ 2\), \(u^ 2=u^ 2_ 1+u^ 2_ 2+u^ 2_ 3\), \(\delta\) is the delta function in one variable, \(\delta^{(4)}\) is the delta function in four variables. For all initial data which are periodic in the space variable and near equilibrium, the authors formulate function spaces \(Y\), estimate the kernel of the linearized collision operator, prove the smoothing property of the linearized equation, and solve the nonlinear problem.
