Let \(X\) be a smooth complex projective threefold and \(\mathcal E\) a very ample vector bundle of rank two on \(X\). The paper under review investigates pairs \((X,\mathcal E)\) as above such that \(H=K_X + \det \mathcal E\) is nef and a suitable positive multiple of \(H\) defines a morphism with connected fibers \(\pi:X \to B\) onto a smooth curve. The main result of the paper consists in inequalities concerning the third Segre class of \(\mathcal E\), obtained by using the double point formula. Using these inequalities it is proved that, if the zero locus of a global section of \(\mathcal E\) is a smooth hyperelliptic curve \(C\) of genus \(g(C) \geq 2\), \(B\) has positive genus, and \(\pi\) is a \(\mathbb P^2\) bundle then the restriction of \(\mathcal E\) to the fibers of \(\pi\) is \(T\mathbb P^2\), \(g(C)=4\) and \(g(B)=1\). These results allow the authors to improve the classification theorem of pairs \((X,\mathcal E)\) with curve genus \(g(X,\mathcal E)=2\) in the case \(\dim X=3\).
