The book is dedicated to the work of H. Bekić and contains selected papers. H. Bekić was one of the key members of the IBM Vienna Laboratory and so many of his works are connected to the developments there especially to the development of PL/1. The selected papers are grouped into three sections: Languages, Language Definition and Parallelism. Many of the works of the first two sections are devoted to PL/1. Some themes are: ''A formal definition of a PL/1 subset'', ''Definable operations in general algebras, and The theory of automata and flowcharts'', ''The meaning of names in PL/1''. The third section contains among others: ''Towards a mathematical theory of processes'', ''The semantics of parallel processing''. The book is completed by a full bibliography with extensive information on the historical background of the publications.
