The authors partially answer a long standing open question to characterize those \(n\)-tuples \(m_1, m_2,\dots, m_n\) of positive integers for which there exists integers \(a_1, a_2,\ldots, a_n\) such that the residue classes \(a_i\bmod m_i\), \(i=1,\ldots,n\) are mutually disjoint. They prove that this is the case whenever \(m_1, m_2,\ldots, m_n\) are such that the pairwise greatest common divisors, \(d_{ij}=(m_i, m_j)\), \(i\neq j\) are distinct and different from 1.
