An algebra retract has been defined as a ring (DG algebra) homomorphism \(j: R \rightarrow A\) that has a left inverse. The left inverse is called a section of \(j\) and \(R\) is also said to be an algebra (DG algebra) retract of \(A\). The transfer of various ring theoretic properties along retracts have been studied over the years. One of the main objectives of the paper under review is to study the descent and ascent of the Golod property along retracts. After the introduction, a section follows that contains the necessary definitions and other background and thereafter a section characterizing Golod modules with respect to vanishing of Massey products on Koszul homologies follows. In the main section of the paper, it is first shown that the Golod property descends along an algebra retract. In general, the Golod property does not ascend along an algebra retract. Certain assumptions on the kernel of sections do ensure ascension though. This result is used in the final section to find new constructions of Golod rings. Characterizations of an ideal of a local ring \(R\) to be a Golod \(R\)-module is given in terms of the fibre product. It is proved for a large homomorphism \(f:(R,\mathfrak{m}) \rightarrow (S, \mathfrak{n})\) of local rings and an \(S\)-module \(M\), that if \(M\) is a Golod \(R\)-module, then \(M\) is an Golod \(S\)-module.
