Let \(A\) be a noetherian local ring with maximal ideal \(\mathfrak{m}\) and \(d = \dim A > 0\). Let \(\ell_A(M)\) denote, for an \(A\)-module \(M\), the length of \(M\). Then for each \(\mathfrak{m}\)-primary ideal \(I\) in \(A\) and for each finitely generated \(A\)-module \(M\) with \(s = \dim_A M\geq 0\), we have integers \(\{e^i_I (M)\}_{0\leq i\leq s}\) such that the equality \[ \ell_A(M/I^{n+1}M) = e^0_I(M){{n+s}\choose s}-e^1_I(M){{n+s-1}\choose {s-1}}+\cdots +(-1)^s e^s_I(M) \] holds true for all integers \(n\gg0\), which we call the Hilbert coefficients of \(M\) with respect to \(I\). \textit{W. V. Vasconcelos} [Mich. Math. J. 57, 725--743 (2008; Zbl 1234.13005)] proved that for every \(m\)-primary ideal \(I\) in \(A\) the set \[ \Lambda(I) = \{e^1_Q (A) | Q \text{is a parameter ideal in \(A\) and} \bar{Q} = \bar{I}\} \] is finite. He raised the following Problem. Is \(\#\Lambda(I)=1\) for every \(\mathfrak{m}\)-primary ideal \(I\) in \(A\)? In the paper under review the authors give affirmative answers and explore counterexamples as well.
