This paper presents an easier proof of Andrews and Clutterbuck's main results that appeared in [\textit{B. Andrews} and \textit{J. Clutterbuck}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 24, No. 3, 899--916 (2011; Zbl 1222.35130)], which consists of both a sharp lower bound for the spectral gap of a Schrödinger operator and a sharp modulus of concavity for the logarithm of the corresponding first eigenfunction. The author uses again the coupling approach (or alternatively the ``double coordinate'' approach) and the asymptotic behavior of parabolic flows. The original proofs are partly simplified. For such an important topic, every meaninful simplication is appreciated. Moreover, the previous development of the problem studied in the paper is carefully reviewed.
