The work aims to develop a systematic application of Lie-symmetry methods to a two-dimensional generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation, in the form of \[ u_t + (F(u))_{xxx} + (G(u))_{xyy} + (H(u))_x = 0. \] Its usual form, with \(F=G=u\) and \(H=u^2\) is a model for the propagation of ion-acoustic waves in plasmas. The paper reports a full group-theory analysis of the general equation, by means of constructing an equivalence transformation and an optimal set of subalgebras of the Lie-symmetry algebra. In this way, invariant reductions to PDEs with two independent variables are carried out, and a number of exact solutions are found. It is demonstrated that the symmetry algebra is at most six-dimensional, in the present case.
