Shape and Structure Analysis is a very broad and active area of research with a considerable literature in Engineering, Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. The computation of the derivative of a domain with respect to its shape is a central element in Shape Sensitivity Analysis. In general the space of domains is not a vector space and special techniques are necessary to make sense of a derivative. The object of this paper is to present a point of view which brings a complete mathematical justification to many formal computations available in the literature. It makes use of a Lagrangian formulation and theorems of the derivative of a minimax functional with respect to a parameter.
