    Let \(X\) be a smooth projective variety of dimension \(n\) defined over the field of complex numbers. For any ample line bundles \(L\) on \(X\), Fujita defined an invariant \(\Delta(X,L)\) (\(=n+L^{n}-h^{0}(X,L)\)) which is called the \(\Delta\)-genus of \((X,L)\). The theory of \(\Delta\)-genus is very useful and we can study various properties of polarized varieties by using the \(\Delta\)-genus. As the next step, it is natural to consider a vector bundle version of the \(\Delta\)-genus. In this paper, the authors give an invariant \(\Delta(X,E)\) of \((X,E)\) as a vector bundle version of the \(\Delta\)-genus, where \(E\) is an ample vector bundle on \(X\). The definition of \(\Delta(X,E)\) is as follows: \(\Delta(X,E) = nr+H(E)^{n+r-1}-h^{0}(X,E)\), where \(H(E)\) denotes the tautological line bundle of the projective bundle \(P_{X}(E)\) associated to \(E\) and \(r\) is the rank of \(E\). (Here we note that the dimension of \(P_{X}(E)\) is \(n+r-1\).) By definition we have \(\Delta(X,E)=(n-1)(r-1)+\Delta(P_{X}(E),H(E))\). So, if \(r=1\), then \(\Delta(X,E)\) is equal to the \(\Delta\)-genus for line bundles, and using non-negativity of the \(\Delta\)-genus for line bundles, we have \(\Delta(X,E)\geq (n-1)(r-1)\). In particular, we see that this invariant is non-negative. In this paper, the authors obtain the classification of \((X,E)\) with \(r\geq 2\) for the following cases. {\parindent=7mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)]The case of \(\Delta(X,E)-(n-1)(r-1)=0, 1\). \item[(2)]The case of \(\Delta(X,E)-(n-1)(r-1)=2\) under the assumption that \(E\) is spanned. \item[(3)]The case of \(\Delta(X,E)-(n-1)(r-1)=3, 4\) under the assumption that \(E\) is very ample. Moreover, using these classifications, the authors also obtain the classifications of \((X,E)\) with small \(\Delta(X,E)\). \end{itemize}}
