The authors give explicit expressions of best uniform approximation by polynomials \(p_{2n}^*\) of degree \(2n\) for functions of the form \(1/(a^2\pm x^2),\) \(x\in[-c,c]\), \(c>0\). In each case, the expression of \(p_{2n}^*\) is obtained using the Chebyshev expansion of the corresponding function \(1/(a^2\pm x^2).\) For the function \(f(x)=1/(a^2-x^2)\), \(x\in[-1,1]\), \(a^2>1,\) the best uniform approximation by polynomials of degree \(2n\) is \(E_{2n}(f;[-1,1])= \| f-p_{2n}^*\|_\infty=\frac{8t^{2n+4}}{(t^{4}-1)^2}\), where \(t=a-\sqrt {a^2-1},\) and for \(f(x)=1/(a^2+x^2),\) \(x\in[-c,c]\), \(a^{2}>c^2\), \(E_{2n}(f)= \| f-p_{2n}^*\|_\infty=\frac{8t^{2n+4} }{c^2(t^4-1)}\), where \(t=(a-\sqrt{a^2-c^2})/c\).
