Partial or factorization indices in the usual sense are integers characterizing matrix functions defined on a closed contour in \({\mathbb{C}}\), but they can also be introduced describing the kernel structure of the corresponding Toeplitz operator and its adjoint. Basing on this observation an abstract definition of UV-partial indices for operators A with \(rank(AU-VA)<\infty\) is given, where U and V are two fixed operators. In that way partial indices can be defined for finite Toeplitz matrices and related matrix classes, some classes of integral operators a.o. It is shown that the abstract partial indices have similar properties as the factorization indices. Furthermore, a connection with the Kronecker indices is described. As an application the following result is proved. For matrices \(T=(t_{i-j})^ n_ 0\) and \(H=(s_{i+j})^ n_ 0\) the estimation \[ | rank(T+H)-rank(T-H)| \leq 2 \] holds.
