[For part II, see Zbl 0907.35022.] The author studies the long time behaviour of nonnegative solutions of the equation \[ u_t=\Delta u^m-u^p, \qquad (x,t)\in\mathbb R^N\times(0,\infty), \tag{1} \] where \((1-2/N)^+<m<p<m+2/N\), \(p>1\), and \(u(x,0)=\phi(x)\) with \(\phi\) being a bounded nonnegative function, \(\lim_{| x| \to\infty}| x| ^\alpha\phi(x)=A>0\), \(\alpha=2/(p-m)\). It is shown that \(\lim_{t\to\infty}t^{1/(p-1)}| u(x,t)-W_A(x,t)| =0\) uniformly on \(\{x:| x| ^\alpha\leq Ct^{1/(p-1)}\}\), and \(\lim_{| x| \to\infty}| x| ^\alpha u(x,t)\) \(=A\) for \(t>0\), where \(W_A\) is the unique nonnegative solution of (1) with the initial value \(\phi(x)=A| x| ^{-\alpha}\). Moreover, \(\lim_{A\to 0+}W_A\) is a very singular solution of (1).
