The Cauchy problem is considered for a pair of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations in one spatial dimension, a special case of which was studied in the authors' previous paper [Adv. Differ. Equ. 1, No. 6, 919-937 (1996; Zbl 0861.35104)], representing long and short waves and their interaction. In the present paper it is shown that this Cauchy problem is well posed in a larger class of initial data than it was proved in the previous paper.
