Let \(a\) be a real number \(\in (-1,0)\), \(\sigma_a(n)\) the sum of \(a\)th powers of positive divisors of \(n\) and \(\Delta_a(x)\) the remainder term in the related divisor problem, \[ \Delta_a(x)= \sum_{n\leq x} \sigma_a(n)- \zeta(1-a) x-\zeta(1+a)/ (1+a)x^{1+a}+ \zeta(-a)/2, \] where \(\zeta(s)\) is the Riemann zeta-function and \(x>0\). Meurman proved that \[ \int_0^x \Delta_a(x)^2 dx= (6+4a)^{-1} \pi^{-2} \zeta(3/2-a) \zeta(3/2+a) \zeta(3/2)^2 \zeta(3)^{-1} X^{3/2+a}+ O(x). \tag{1} \] Meurman also proved that \[ \int_0^X \Delta_{-1/2}(x)^2 dx= \zeta(3/2)^2 (24\zeta(3))^{-1}X\log X+ O(x) \] and that \[ \int_0^X \Delta_a(x)^2 dx= O(X) \quad\text{for }-1< a<-1/2. \] Matsumoto conjectured that the left-hand side of (1) should be \[ \begin{aligned} =&C_1(a) X^{3/2+a}+ C_2(a)X+ o(X), \quad\text{if }-1/2< a<0,\\ =&C_3X\log X+C_4X+ o(X), \quad\text{if }a=-1/2 \qquad\text{and}\\ =&D_1(X)+ o(X), \quad\text{if }-1< a<1/2. \end{aligned} \] In this paper the author proves Matsumoto's conjecture for \(-1< a<-1/2\) by showing that the left-hand side of (1) is \[ = D_1x+ O(X^{3/2+a} \log x) \] with \(D_1(a)= (2\pi^2)^{-1} \sum_{n=1}^\infty (\sigma_{1+a} (n)/n)^2\). He also proves some generalizations of the above problem.
