A compressed rectangular bar made of an isotropic incompressible elastic material, satisfying the Hadamard condition, is examined from the point of view of equilibrium stability. The parameter is the material stiffness, and it is found that the behaviour depends on this rigidity, conventionally classified as low, moderate, and high stiffness. Simple criteria are obtained to determine the class to which the material belongs. Some very interesting instability modes are found, according to these classes.
