The paper deals with an analysis and design of a parallel structure of a fuzzy PID control architecture. The topology of this controller involves a parallel combination of a fuzzy PI and fuzzy PD controller. Each of these fuzzy controllers is implemented with the use of two triangular fuzzy sets defined in each input variable and three fuzzy sets (singletons) defined in the output space. A systematic tuning method based on gain margin and phase margin specifications is introduced. A comparative analysis reveals a superiority of the proposed controller over the existing controllers. The bounded-input bounded-output stability analysis is completed resulting in a sufficient stability condition. Experimental results concern a coupled-tank system.
