The author is concerned with hyperridigity of \(C^\ast\)-correspondences. Hyperrigidity for operator systems (\(\ast\)-closed unital subspaces of a unital \(C^\ast\)-algebra) was introduced by \textit{W.~Arveson} [Isr. J. Math. 184, 349--385 (2011; Zbl 1266.46045)]. It is said that a non-degenerate \(C^\ast\)-correspondence \((A,X)\) is hyperrigid if the operator space \[ S(A,X)=\text{span}\{x+a+y^\ast\colon\,x,y\in X, \ a\in A\}\subset\mathcal{O}_X \] has the following extension property: given a representation \(\pi\colon\,\mathcal{O}_X\rightarrow B(H)\), if \(\varphi\colon\,\mathcal{O}_X\rightarrow B(H)\) is a completely positive and completely contractive map which agrees with \(\pi\) on \(S(A,X)\), then \(\varphi\) must agree with \(\pi\) on \(\mathcal{O}_X\). The main result of the paper says that hyperrigidity for a \(C^\ast\)-correspondence \((A,X)\) is equivalent to non-degeneracy of the left action of the Katsura ideal \(\mathcal{J}_X\) on \(X\). The Katsura ideal was introduced by \textit{T. Katsura} [J. Funct. Anal. 217, No. 2, 366--401 (2004; Zbl 1067.46054)].
