In [\textit{M. J. Chasco} et al., Stud. Math. 132, No. 3, 257--284 (1999; Zbl 0930.46006)] the following definition was introduced: An abelian topological group $G$ is called $g$-barrelled if every $\sigma(G^\wedge,G)$-compact subset $K$ of the character group $G^\wedge$ is equicontinuous. In the same paper it was shown that if $(G,\tau)$ is a locally quasi-convex $g$-barrelled group, the $\tau$ is the finest locally quasi-convex group topology on $G$ giving rise to the character group $G^\wedge.$ Only 20 years later, in the current paper, permanence properties of $g$-barrelled groups are studied. The main result says that an arbitrary product of $g$-barrelled groups is again $g$-barrelled.
