It is a well-known conjecture of Erdős and Szemerédi that for \(A\) a subset of the reals one has \[ |A+ A| + |AA| \gg |A|^{2 - \varepsilon} \] for every positive \(\varepsilon\). Meanwhile, various results and conjectures around this conjecture exist. The present paper makes a contribution to this circle of ideas. The main results asserts that for \(A\) a set of algebraic numbers of degree at most \(d\) (note that the condition on the degree is for each number individually not for the field extension generated by \(A\)) one has: if \(|AA| <K |A|\), then for each \(B \subset A\) and each finite \(D \subset \mathbb{C}\), for \(\varepsilon>0\) one has \[ | \{ (x_1,x_2,y_1,y_2) \in B^2\times D^2 : x_1 + x_2 = y_1 + y_2 \} | < K^{C(d, \varepsilon)} |A|^{\varepsilon} |B | \;|D|^{1+ \varepsilon}. \] Thus, in particular (under assumptions and notation as above) \[ |B+D| > K^{-C(d, \varepsilon)} |A|^{-\varepsilon} |B | \;|D|^{1- \varepsilon}. \] In addition, related investigations on algebraic numbers of bounded degree and height are carried out, and a geometric application is given.
