The study refers to a variable coefficient viscoelastic wave equation with a nonlinear source term and with a homogeneous Dirichlet condition on a portion of the boundary and acoustic boundary conditions on the rest of the boundary. Under some special assumptions on the initial data, the relaxation function and the coefficients of the system, there is proved that the energy solution decays polynomially. Further, one deals with the blow-up properties of the local solution and estimates for the lifespan. An exponential decay of the global solution to the same system has been studied by the authors in an earlier paper [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 97, 191--209 (2014; Zbl 1284.35253)].
