Let \(X\) be a Kobayashi hyperbolic and cocompact complex manifold, and \(f: X \to X\) a univalent holomorphic self-map. A backward orbit for \(f\) is a sequence \((z_n)\) such that \(f(z_{n+1}) = z_n\). Such a backward orbit has bounded step if the Kobayashi distance between \(z_n\) and \(z_{n+1}\) is uniformly bounded. The stable subset of \(f\) is defined as the union of backward orbits with bounded steps. Similarly, if \(\zeta\) is a repelling fixed point, the stable subset of \(\zeta\) is the union of backward orbits with bounded steps converging to \(\zeta\). By studying the general structure of decreasing sequences of domains with non empty intersection in such a space \(X\), the author establishes that, given such a map \(f\), the stable subset is the disjoint union of invariant complex submanifolds, characterized by some natural universal properties with respect to pre-models for \(f\). The result is applied to the situation of a univalent self-map of the unit ball \(\mathbb B^q\) with a boundary repelling fixed point.
