The family of semiabelian \(p\)-groups is the minimal family that contains \(\{1\}\) and is closed under quotients and semidirect products with finite Abelian \(p\)-groups. The family \(\mathcal G_p\) is the minimal family containing finite Abelian \(p\)-groups, closed under wreath products and taking rank-preserving epimorphic images. The paper is inspired by the recent number-theoretic result by \textit{H. Kisilevsky} and \textit{J. Sonn} [Compos. Math. 146, No. 3, 599-606 (2010; Zbl 1197.11150)], the solution of the minimal ramification problem for the family \(\mathcal G_p\). They also prove that this family is a subfamily of semiabelian \(p\)-groups. The main result of the present paper is that \(\mathcal G_p\), in fact, comprises the entire family of semiabelian \(p\)-groups. The key ingredient of the proof is the application of the characterization of semiabelian groups by \textit{R. Dentzer} [Manuscr. Math. 86, No. 2, 199-216 (1995; Zbl 0836.12002)] as groups with decompositions with a normal Abelian and a semiabelian factor, determining the rank of a minimal decomposition of a semiabelian \(p\)-group.
