The paper deals with dynamical bifurcations and final patterns of the modified Swift-Hohenberg equation \[ u_t=\alpha u -(1+\partial_{xx})2u+\mu u_x^2-u^3, \] where \(u: \mathbb{R}\times[0,\infty)\to\mathbb{R}\), \(\alpha\in\mathbb{R}\) is a control parameter related to the driving force of the system and \(\mu\in\mathbb{R}\). The equation is considered under the periodic boundary condition on \([-\lambda,\lambda]\) for some \(\lambda>0,\) that is, \(u(x,t)=u(x+2\lambda,t)\). The main result of the paper asserts that the above equation bifurcates from the trivial solution to an \(S^1\)-attractor as the control parameter \(\alpha\) passes through a critical number \(\hat{\alpha}\). The bifurcated attractor is studied in details by means of center manifold analysis, and it is shown that it consists of a finite number of singular points and their connecting orbits. The stability of these points is studied and numerical results are given.
