The authors describe the structure of cotilting and partially cotilting Abelian groups, and all cotilting torsion-free classes of groups, under ZFC. Under the axiom V = L, they also describe the tilting and partially tilting groups. As the main tool, they introduce the concept of almost cotorsion groups, which are particular subgroups of direct products of the integers satisfying certain homological properties. Unlike the well-known cotorsion groups, almost cotorsion groups have a complex structure. Using Shelah's Black Box, the authors show that every cotorsion-free ring can be realized as the endomorphism ring of some almost cotorsion group.
