The paper under review deals with the following property of a subgroup \(H\) of a group \(R\). The property states that for \(y\in R\) one has that \(y\in H\) whenever \(yN\in HN/N\), for all the normal subgroups \(N\) of \(R\) such the quotients \(R/N\) belong to a certain class \(\mathcal C\). If the property holds for the (residually \(\mathcal C\)) group \(R\), and its subgroup \(H\), then \(H\) is said to be conjugacy \(\mathcal C\)-distinguished. The authors take \(\mathcal C\) to be a non-empty class of finite groups, which is closed under taking subgroups, images and extensions. They show that if \(R\) has a normal, free subgroup such that the quotient group is in \(\mathcal C\), then every finitely generated subgroup is \(\mathcal C\)-distinguished. Similar results, when \(\mathcal C\) is the class of finite groups, are shown to hold for limit groups, Lyndon groups, and certain one-relator groups.
