Let \(X\) be a Banach space, \(X_d\) a complex sequence space, and let \(\{\psi_k\}\subset X\) be an \(X^*_d\)-Bessel sequence for \(X^*_\infty\) with bound \(B'\). There are defined and investigated operators \(M,M': X\to X\) of the form \(\sum^\infty_{k=1} m_k\psi_k(f)\phi_k\), where \(m= \{m_k\}\), called \((X_d, X^*_d)\)-Bessel multipliers, which are shown to be compact. Next, there are investigated various problems concerning operators \(M\) and \(M'\), as invertibility, continuity of dependence of \(M'\) on \(m\), \(\{\psi_k\}\) and \(\{\varphi_k\}\), and nuclearity of \(M\).
