Due to Drinfeld one knows a correspondence between \(R\)-matrices for the quantum groups and non-trivial twistings \(V\otimes W\to W\otimes V\) for modules over the quantum groups. In the present paper the authors investigate systematically algebraic generalizations of Drinfeld's idea. More exactly, let \(V\) be a free module over a commutative ring \(A\). Define a Yang-Baxter operator on \(V\) to be an automorphism \(\beta\in \text{End}_ A(V\otimes V)\) satisfying the quantum Yang-Baxter equation in \(V^{\otimes 3}\). It is well-known that such \(\beta\) determines on \(V^{\otimes k}=T_ k V\) the structure of modules over the braid group \({\mathfrak B}_ k\). Then using a map from the symmetric group \({\mathfrak S}_ k\) to \({\mathfrak B}_ k\) constructed by Iwahori, the authors define a non- trivial twisting \(T_ k V\otimes T_ n V\to T_ n V\otimes T_ k V\), which in its turn determines a Yang-Baxter operator on the tensor algebra \(TV=\bigoplus_{k\geq 0} T_ k V\). This observation enables the authors to construct quantum analogues of some classical linear-algebraic objects such as matrices, symmetric and alternating tensors, determinants. These objects are constructed from Jimbo's solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation of type \(A^{(1)}_{n-1}\) and are used in the representation theory of quantum deformations of the general linear group.
