The first part of this paper investigates the degenerate principal series representations\break \(\{\text{Ind}^{GL_n(C)}_{P_k} \chi_{\alpha,\beta}\}\) of \(GL_n(C)\) induced by the characters \(\chi_{\alpha,\beta}\) of a parabolic subgroup \(P_k\) of \(GL_n(C)\). Let \(K=U(n)\) be a maximal compact subgroup of \(GL_n(C)\) and \(S^{\alpha,\beta}\) be a \(GL_n(C)\)-module which is isomorphic to \(\{\text{Ind}^{GL_n(C)}_{P_k} \chi_{\alpha,\beta}\}\). The authors decompose the restriction of \(S^{\alpha,\beta}\) to \(K\) into a direct sum of irreducible \(K\)-modules \(V_\lambda\) with highest weight \(\lambda\), study the actions of the enveloping algebra \({\mathfrak gl}_n(C)\) on \(K\)-types \(V_\lambda\) and describe the highest weight vectors in each \(K\)-type \(V_\lambda\). From these transition formulas they can determine for which values of \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) the module \(S^{\alpha,\beta}\) is irreducible or not. In case \(S^{\alpha,\beta}\) is reducible they describe the composition series. The authors also study the unitary case: If \(\alpha\neq\beta\) or \(n>2k\), every constituent of \(S^{ \alpha, \beta}\) outside the unitary axis and the trivial representation is not unitary; when \(n=2k\) and \(-n/2-1< \alpha= \beta<- n/2+1\), there is a Stein complementary series; when \(n=2k\) nd \(\alpha=\beta\) is real, then the ``large'' constituent for which all the \(\lambda\) are unbounded is unitary. Finally the authors investigate the relation between the constituents of various series. The second part of the paper studies the degenerate principal representations of \(GL_n(R)\). Since the calculations are analogous to the previous ones the presentations are somewhat shorter.
