The authors study a time-domain electromagnetic scattering by one-dimensional periodic structures. More precisely, it is considered an electromagnetic plane wave incident on a one-dimensional grating of very general form, so that the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are bounded measurable functions periodic in \(x\). In this case the \(3D\) Maxwell systems can be decomposed into two polarizations: transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. For both modes the problem reduces to the \(2D\) wave equation. Then the authors introduce an exact time-domain transparent boundary condition and obtain an equivalent boundary value problem in a bounded domain. Main results, obtained by the energy method, concern the well-posedness and stability of the time-dependent problem.
