The application of the finite element method (FEM) to semi-infinite structures encounters some specifical difficulties. To overcome them is devoted this paper. In most of situations the structure to be analysed (of finite extent) is implanted into a semi-infinite space, so that the FEM cannot be applied directly. To approach the problem, the global field is viewed as the superposition of two fields: the near field including the structure to be analysed, and the far field (FF). The problem is how to tackle the FF. To simulate its infinite extent, i.e. the absence of reflections, various solutions have been proposed. The paper extends previous methods to the case when the underlying medium is layered. The efficiency of the present approach is tested by comparison with other methods (analytical solution, the so-called NRBC method) which provide similar results.
