This paper extends a result by \textit{P. Hartman} and \textit{A. Wintner} [Am. J. Math. 77, 45--86 (1955; Zbl 0064.08703)] on the integration of almost diagonal systems \[ y'(t)= \Lambda(t)y+ R(t)y \] (\(\Lambda\) diagonal, \(R\in L^p\)) to nonlinear functional-differential equations of type \(y'= L(y_t)+ R(t,y_t)+ f(t,y_t)\) where \(L(\phi)= \int^0_{-r} d\eta(\theta\phi(\theta)\), \(\eta\) a matrix, \(R(t,\cdot)\) is linear and \(R(t,\cdot)\in L(\mathbb{R}^+;\mathbb{R})\), for some \(p\in [1,2]\), \(| f(t,\phi_1)- f(t,\phi_2)|\leq \gamma(t)|\phi_1- \phi_2|\), \(\gamma\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^+)\). It is assumed that the characteristic equation has a simple root \(\lambda_0\) with no other root having the same real part. The functional-differential equation is considered as an ordinary differential equation in a Banach space and the contraction mapping principle is applied. This gives the existence of a solution of the FDE related to \(\lambda_0\), including an asymptotic formula for this solution.
