    Der Verf. setzt seine Untersuchungen über die Eigenwerte \(\lambda_ 1,...,\lambda_{N-1}\) der Matrix \(A_ N=(a_{m,n})_{2\leq m,n\leq N}\) mit \(a_{m,n}=m-1\) für \(m| n\), \(a_{m,n}=-1\) sonst [vgl. ibid. 81, 153-198 (1986; Zbl 0602.10029)] fort. Er beweist zunächst arithmetische Identitäten für das charakteristische Polynom \(\chi_ N(x)\) von \(A_ N\). Eine zentrale Rolle spielt dabei die multiplikative zahlentheoretische Funktion \(\tau\) mit \(\tau (p^ m)=\prod_{1\leq k\leq m}(1-p^{-k})^{-1}\) für Primzahlpotenzen \(p^ m.\) Anschließend zeigt der Verf. die folgenden Abschätzungen. Bei genügend großem \(N_ 0\) sei \(N\geq N_ 0\) und \(M=[N/2]\). Dann ist M die größte ganze Zahl, die ein Eigenwert von \(A_ N\) ist. Das Intervall \(]M,M+1[\) enthält keinen Eigenwert von \(A_ N\). Jedes Intervall ]n-1,n[ mit \(M+2\leq n\leq N\) enthält genau einen Eigenwert \(\lambda_ n\) von \(A_ N\). Dieser hat die Vielfachheit 1, und es gilt \[ n-1\quad +\quad \frac{\tau (n-1)}{3 \log N}\leq \lambda_ n\leq n\quad -\quad \frac{\tau (n)}{3 \log N}\quad. \] Für \(k\geq 0\) gilt \(\sum_{1\leq n\leq N-1}n^ k\leq\sum^{N-1}_{n=1}\lambda^ k_ n\leq\sum_{2\leq n\leq N}n^ k\).
