The topological Hochschild homology of a structured ring spectrum \(A\) can be defined as the cyclic bar construction of \(A\) with respect to the smash product of spectra. When \(A\) is commutative, then this cyclic bar construction can be identified with \(S^1\otimes A\), the tensor of the simplicial circle \(S^1\) with \(A\). The Loday construction generalizes this tensor construction to the case where \(A\) is an augmented algebra spectrum and \(S^1\) is replaced by a general (pointed) simplicial set. For \(X = S^n\), the Loday construction specializes to the so-called higher topological Hochschild homology. In the present paper, the authors develop several results about the Loday construction and apply them to calculations of higher topological Hochschild homology. For example, they establish a juggling formula that allows to simplify the Loday construction in certain cases where \(X\) is a suspension. This extends earlier work by 4 of the 6 authors with \textit{G. Halliwell} [Topology Appl. 235, 523--545 (2018; Zbl 1411.13021)] and leads to a generalization of a splitting formula by \textit{J. P. C. Greenlees} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 220, No. 4, 1382--1402 (2016; Zbl 1332.55003)]. As one of their calculational applications, the authors identify the higher topological Hochschild homology of \(\mathbb Z/p^m\) with coefficients in \(\mathbb Z/p\) as an iterated \(\mathrm{Tor}\) algebra. This generalizes results by \textit{M. Brun} [ibid. 148, No. 1, 29--76 (2000; Zbl 0951.19001)] and \textit{T. Pirashvili} [Commun. Algebra 23, No. 4, 1545--1549 (1995; Zbl 0818.18006)]. The authors also determine the higher topological Hochschild homology of algebraic function fields over \(\mathbb F_p\).
