The authors determine all solutions \(g, h : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}\) of the functional equation \[ g(x)g(y)-g(x+y) = h(x+y-xy)-h(x)-h(y)+h(xy) \tag{1} \] for all \(x, y \in \mathbb{R}\). They establish the following result: Suppose the functions \(g, h : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}\) satisfy the functional Equation (1) and \(h\) is continuous. Then \(g\) is a solution of the exponential Cauchy equation \(g(x+y)=g(x)g(y)\) and there exist constants \(a, b \in \mathbb{R}\) such that \(h(x) = ax+b\) holds for all \(x \in \mathbb{R}\). This result is in connection with the alienation of the exponential Cauchy equation and the Hosszú equation \(h(x+y-xy)+h(xy) = h(x)+h(y)\). It turns out that these equations are alien provided that \(h\) is continuous.
