The authors study the problem of reconstruction velocity \(u\) from images of the measured passive scalar field \(\psi\) while the reconstructed scalar field \(\varphi\) is advected by the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations satisfied by \(u\). The idea is to minimize a cost functional penalizing \(\varphi-\psi\). A numerical technique is analyzed, and a kind of stability of reconstruction \(\psi\mapsto u\) is shown.
