As a generalization of weak Hopf algebras, introduced by \textit{G. Böhm} et al. [J. Algebra 221, No. 2, 385-438 (1999; Zbl 0949.16037)], the authors define weak multiplier Hopf algebras. A unique antipode is constructed for such an object, and its main properties are given. It is shown that a weak Hopf algebra is a weak multiplier Hopf algebra. Weak multiplier Hopf algebras that are regular are investigated; the regular property turns out to be equivalent to the bijectivity of the antipode. It is shown that a regular weak multiplier Hopf algebra is a weak Hopf algebra if the underlying algebra has an identity.
