These notes can be seen as a continuation of the work of both authors on set-theoretic solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, or equivalently, the braid equation. In this paper, a specific class of set-theoretic solutions are studied, which are square-free and of multipermutation type of level two. These have attached a complete datum and satisfy that the permutation group is abelian. The main result of the paper states that the braided vector space associated to the set-theoretic solution and the complete datum has a basis in which the braiding is diagonal. After proving this result, explicit examples are given. In particular, one more example is added to support the conjecture that the converse holds. The paper ends with the study of the structure of the quantum algebras generated by the braided vector spaces of diagonal type. Among other things, it is shown that they can be obtained as a cocycle deformation of the polynomial algebra and that they are realized as braided Hopf algebras in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the permutation group.
