The paper deals with control systems of the form \(\dot x=f(x,u)\) where f is of class \(C^ 1\). Most of the results are obtained with respect to systems in which the control appears linearly, that is \(f(x,u)=g(x)+H(x)u\) where g and H are continuously differentiable in some open subset of \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) with range in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and \({\mathbb{R}}^{nm}\), respectively. The main purpose is to prove the existence of control pairs x, u such that x is periodic and such that x, u minimize (relative to an appropriate family of state and control pairs x, u, where x is periodic with period T) a cost functional of the form \[ J(x,u,T)=\frac{1}{T}\int^{T}_{0}w(x(s),u(s))ds, \] and to characterize, in terms of necessary conditions, such pairs as well. The first section is a good introduction presenting natural motivation and a review of known results concerning several special cases. In Sect. 2 sufficient conditions for local existence of optimal control are given such that periodicity conditions (for the state function) are satisfied. The main assumption is that the uncontrolled system \(\dot x=f(x,0)\) has a periodic solution. In Sect. 3 some necessary conditions and certain computational methods are presented.
