Let \(S\) be a monoid and let \(\varphi_A\colon A_S\to\hom(\hom(A_S,S_S),S_S)\) be the mapping defined by \(\varphi_A(a)(f)=f(a)\). A right \(S\)-act \(A_S\) is called `torsionless' if \(\varphi_A\) is injective and `dense' if \(\varphi_A\) is surjective. The article gives torsionless conditions for general acts as well as for acts from certain classes. It is proved, for example, that all free right \(S\)-acts are torsionless if and only if \(S\) contains no right zero and vice versa, that all torsionless right \(S\)-acts are free if and only if (a) \(S\) is cancellative; (b) every non-empty intersection of principal left ideals of \(S\) is a principal left ideal; (c) incomparable principal right ideals of \(S\) are disjoint and (d) \(S\) satisfies the ascending chain condition for principal right ideals. Conditions for acts to be dense are given as well, accompanied by some examples.
