This paper (which seems to be a condensed version of the paper by the same author in the proceedings ``Multigrid'', Academic Press, N.Y., edited by U.\ Trottenberg et al. (2001; Zbl 0976.65106)) discusses and illustrates possibilities of algebraic multigrid algorithms for the solution of, e.g., heat conduction problems (with highly varying coefficients) or of flow problems (in complex solution domains) when several millions of unknowns are required to represent the geometry and the solution with high accuracy. The computer program incorporating the features discussed here is RAMG05 which replaces AMG1R5, a program made publicly available more than a decade ago. The author explains the close interplay between interpolation on the one hand, and coarsening strategies and smoothing iterations on the other hand. There is also an interesting discussion of and comparison with aggregation-type algebraic multigrid.
