This paper presents a purely model-theoretic condition necessary and sufficient for the usual syntactic notion of relative interpretability between first-order theories. The condition involves the existence of a reduction functor between the respective model classes which preserves ultraproducts. A natural generalization is found whose syntactic equivalent is a notion of interpretability closer to those used in actual mathematical practice.
