The author develops a valuation theory for generalized polygons similar to the existing theory for dense near polygons (cf. \textit{B. De Bruyn} and \textit{P. Vandecasteele} [Glasg. Math. J. 47, No. 2, 347--361 (2005; Zbl 1085.51009)]). In this paper in particular, polygonal valuations are studied. The author determines polygonal valuations of generalized quadrangles as well as of generalized hexagons and generalizes polygonal valuations to semi-valuations. Section \(4\) is devoted to special semi-valuations, to the neighboring semi-valuations. In Section \(5\), the author treats generalized \(2d\)-gons having precisely three points on each of its lines. In the last section, he shows how polygonal valuations naturally arise in some concrete situations. Moreover, the results of this section offer an indication how polygonal valuations can be helpful for classifying those generalized \(2d\)-gons that contain a particular generalized \(2d\)-gon as subgeometry.
