The numerical solution of a three-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem on an infinite slab is investigated. As known inverse heat conduction problems are severely ill-posed, where the higher-dimensional problems are much more ill-posed (in the high-frequency components) than the lower-dimensional. A mollification procedure is applied, where for the mollified inverse problem the stability and error analysis associated with the well-posed problem is given. Furthermore, the authors develop a fully explicit finite difference scheme for the associated well-posed problem. Finally, a numerical example is discussed.
