The nonlinear Schrödinger equation appears as a model in many areas of physics. The equation is an accurate model in the context of single-mode optical fibers over short distances. More precisely, the authors consider the problem of the error in soliton transmission in long-haul optical fibers caused by the spontaneous emission of noise inherent to amplification. In this framework, they study two specific models on this topic which are SPDEs. The authors use large deviations estimates to evaluate theoretically the probability of large fluctuations of the mass and arrival time. They give precise upper and lower bounds of the large deviations probabilities. Similar results have been obtained in the physics literature but using methods difficult to justify mathematically.
