The paper deals with the nonlinear wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions \[ \begin{aligned} u_{tt}-u_{xx}+\mu u+f(u)=&0,\,\,\,x\in [0,\pi],\,\,\,t\in I\!\!R,\\ u(t,0)=&u(t,\pi)=0,\end{aligned} \] where \(\mu \) is a positive small parameter and \(f\) is a real analytic, odd function of the form \(f(u)\sum_{k\geq 3}f_ku^k\), with \(f_3\not=0\). Using a fourth order Birkhoff ``seminormal form'' for the associated Hamiltonian system, the authors prove the existence and the multiplicity of smooth periodic solutions which have small amplitudes and large minimal periods.
